Leadership

From technical performance to collective delivery capability

Procurement taught leadership without formal authority. Construction made it possible to hire, train and develop a team. The current role extends into coaching other construction leaders.

Progression

Four leadership modes

  1. 01

    Individual contributor

    What changed

Success depended heavily on the quality of my own analysis and execution.

    What it taught

    Build technical depth and credibility.

  2. 02

    Matrix leader

    What changed

Responsible for project results produced by people I did not manage functionally.

    What it taught

Influence, clarity, follow-through and accountability without formal authority.

  3. 03

    Direct team leader

    What changed

Hire, train, supervise and develop a dedicated team.

    What it taught

Create the conditions in which different people can succeed.

  4. 04

    Leader developing leaders

    What changed

Coach Subcontract Managers and Project Construction Managers.

    What it taught

Scale project discipline through other managers, not only through direct reports.

Principles

How leadership shows up on a project

Collective performance matters more than individual brilliance

A leader's output is the capability and result of the team, not the quality of his own work. The question moved from “Did I perform well?” to “Did the team perform well?”

Different people need different levels of direction

Some receive an objective and deliver independently; many need guidance, training, supervision and follow-up, and occasionally a firm course correction. Support adapts to the person; expectations stay constant.

Leadership requires development and accountability

Hiring, training, performance and succession are part of project execution, not an HR activity running alongside it.

Metrics are management tools, not reporting artifacts

The objective is not teaching people to read SPI, CPI or productivity indicators. It is helping construction leaders convert them into priorities, escalation and corrective field action.

Developing people

Training & instruction experience

Training responsibility grew with the role — from scheduling and risk tools, to the project-controls discipline behind them, to methodology rollout, to coaching other managers.

  1. 01

    Tools

Instructor experience in Oracle Primavera P6, Oracle Primavera Risk Analysis / Pertmaster and Microsoft Project for project teams, including consulting instruction with Bessa Consultores.

  2. 02

    Discipline

Development of engineers and planners in project-controls practice — progress measurement, forecasting and reporting discipline.

  3. 03

    Methodology

AWP and Workface Planning rollout training for internal teams and contractor planners.

  4. 04

    Leadership

Coaching Subcontract Managers and Project Construction Managers on converting metrics into field decisions.

Evidence

Where it is visible

  • Organization building

An AWP and construction organization built for a major hydrogen program: AWP Champion, Information Manager and discipline Workface Planners recruited, trained and pre-mobilized ahead of construction.

  • Knowledge exchange

External AWP practitioners engaged as a learning process adapted to internal standards, rather than importing another organization's methodology wholesale.

  • Developing managers

Coaching Subcontract Managers and Project Construction Managers on project-controls metrics, reporting discipline and Project Manager expectations.
