From a pilot in the mechanical phase to an AWP organization on a major hydrogen program
Pilot before scale — Olin, McIntosh
A grey hydrogen SMR project in McIntosh, Alabama was used deliberately as the Workface Planning pilot environment, with O3 Solutions as the digital environment.
McIntosh had not originally been planned as an AWP project — WFP was introduced during the mechanical phase. That made it a realistic test rather than a prepared demonstration, and it still materially strengthened mechanical execution.
Scaling into an organization — OCI, Nederland
The blue hydrogen SMR program in Nederland, Texas required hiring, training and developing the people a major program needs. External AWP practitioners accelerated onboarding, while the delivery model was adapted to internal standards, engineering deliverables and project-specific execution needs — a knowledge exchange rather than an imported methodology.
An AWP Champion was mobilized upstream to coordinate with engineering and fabrication yards before moving to site, because field readiness is created through engineering sequence, fabrication, material status, information maturity and work-package definition long before mobilization.
An Information Manager was hired to own system integrations, database exchanges, information flow, communication plans and training.
Discipline Workface Planners were pre-mobilized ahead of mechanical construction — equipment and structural steel; piping; electrical and instrumentation — acting as the interface between project requirements and contractor execution.
Leadership layer
Construction and AWP leadership set governance, priorities, readiness expectations and cross-discipline alignment. The AWP Champion and Information Manager connected upstream engineering and the data environment to field readiness. Discipline planners translated project needs into execution readiness and coordinated contractor planners.
Workface Planning is not about creating more work packages. It is about creating executable work.
